Describing my schedule to anyone who is not (or hasn't been) a DTH editor makes me look insane. I'm pretty sure that to my friends outside the paper, it's a little unclear if I'm being held hostage.
Essentially, I'm at the office from 3 p.m. to midnight or so Sundays through Thursdays. Don't worry, the cash pays off. The ~$0.25 an hour I make really helps put a dent in all the takeout I eat.
But I love what I do and I love who I work with. It feels like I'm working toward my own greater good and the greater good of the paper. It's a rewarding feeling — one Sam Reckford also shares as a graduate student in costume production at UNC. Read more about what her days typically look like here.
Looking inward
Last week, NBC reporter Craig Calcaterra published an article detailing William Rand Kenan Sr.'s involvement in the Wilmington Massacre. Kenan is the namesake for Kenan Memorial Stadium, where the UNC football team plays. During the 1898 massacre, Kenan led a militia that eventually killed 25 Black people, a sizable portion of the nearly 300 killed and countless Black residents that were run out of town.
Last night, UNC was stomped by Miami — a game characterized by costly miscues and defensive touchdowns by Miami.
One recent study made me .... nervous. According to a study on behalf of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, college students graduate only prepared for entry-level positions and aren't ready for promotions in their fields.
Looking back & looking forward
A little over a year ago, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. For Yainira Méndez, Lissie Rivera, Jorge Santana, the hurricane both complicated and pushed them toward transferring to UNC.
UNC was awarded a four-year grant by the National Science Foundation to research and develop a more resilient public water infrastructure for the state — a need that feels even more pertinent moving forward from Hurricane Florence.

An extra opinion
In the wake of yesterday's Senate hearing, here are some pieces from our opinion desk:

"Column: Where's the evidence?" by Seth Newkirk
"I woke with a head full of songs."
