North Carolina freshman running back Giovani Bernard suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during practice on Sunday afternoon and will be sidelined for the entire 2010 season, team spokesman Kevin Best said in an email on Monday.
The injury will require season-ending surgery and the freshman, who was rater the No. 2 tailback in Florida during high school, will receive a medical redshirt.
Bernard, who practiced with the team officially only twice before his injury, took drills with the third team during Friday’s practice. He was competing for a spot in the backfield with Shaun Draughn, Ryan Houston and Johnny White.
He also saw time returning kicks and punts with special teams on Friday.
