Bowles comments on NCAA investigation

Erskine Bowles, the president of the UNC-system, wrote an e-mail to the Board of Governors reassuring them that UNC-Chapel Hill is doing “everything humanly possible to get to the bottom of this matter.”

The University will continue to look into the football team and “take appropriate action until we are sure we have gotten to the bottom of this and done everything possible to make sure it never happens again.”

Members of the Board of Governors:

I have been speaking with Chancellor Thorp every day and, in turn, keeping Chairman Gage informed about the status of the investigation into the UNC-Chapel Hill football program. I can assure you that Chancellor Thorp is doing everything humanly possible to get to the bottom of this matter. All of us who love Chapel Hill and are proud of the enormous good it does are greatly saddened by what we have discovered.

The Chancellor, the Athletic Director, the Coach, and our investigative team are all working together to get the full facts. The decision has been made to err on the side of caution. Therefore, a number of players will not play in the LSU game tomorrow night, even though they may be subsequently cleared of violations by our investigative group or by the Honor Council. The university, under the leadership of our Chancellor, will continue to investigate this matter and to take appropriate action until we are sure we have gotten to the bottom of this and done everything possible to make sure it never happens again.

I have copied below for your information the announcement just released by the campus.

Erskine
