Davis' media address yields no new developments

No new developments came out of Butch Davis’ media address Thursday before practice, just two days before North Carolina’s home opener against Georgia Tech.

Davis said no players have been cleared since running back Shaun Draughn was ruled eligible for competition on Monday. He also said that players who are ineligible to play will not dress out on the sidelines.

Two weeks ago against Louisiana State, 12 Tar Heels — Marvin Austin was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules — sat out while their eligibility was being determined. Twelve players including Austin were still not able to play at the time of Thursday’s practice.

“We’re practicing with the guys who are out here every day,” Davis said. “I think most of the guys that are in doubt and have been in limbo, those guys are working on the scout team, taking advantage of individual drills to keep their skills sharp.

“In groups and walk-throughs we’ve encouraged those guys to stay mentally involved — watch game plans, sit in on meetings, watch the practice tapes.”

Davis filled the coaching vacancy left by former associate head coach John Blake with former NFL assistant coach Charlie Coiner. Blake resigned last week amid speculation of his involvement with the NCAA investigation. Coiner works as an assistant defensive coach with the defensive line, the role Blake had before resigning. But Davis said he has not found a replacement for recruiting coordinator — Blake’s other position.

“That’s something we won’t make a decision on probably until the season’s over,” Davis said.
