After 22 years at North Carolina, men’s soccer coach Elmar Bolowich resigned Wednesday with an announcement by UNC athletic director Dick Baddour.
The 2010 ACC Coach of the Year will be assume a head coaching job at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., after leaving Chapel Hill on Feb. 28.
“I’m ready for a new challenge in my life, and Creighton has committed itself to making their men’s soccer team a national powerhouse,” Bolowich said in a press release. “I’d like to help take them there as I have done at Carolina.”
Assistant coach Carlos Somoano, who has worked with Bolowich and the Tar Heels for nine years, will assume the role of head coach until North Carolina names Bolowich’s successor.
After leading UNC to a national championship in 2001, Bolowich has since coached his teams to three straight College Cup appearances.
Bolowich will leave North Carolina after a 16-4-4 season and a regular season ACC championship. The coach has 280 wins to his name while at North Carolina.
