The No. 8 North Carolina men’s lacrosse team lost to Maryland 13-6 on Sunday at Fetzer Field in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Terrapins jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter, but goals from senior Billy Bitter kept the Tar Heels within reach. Bitter led UNC with three goals, all of which he scored during the first half.
UNC trailed by just two going into halftime, but Maryland went on a 6-0 run in the second half. Maryland goalie Niko Amato racked up 13 saves and helped limit the Tar Heels to just two second-half goals.
Maryland had 27 groundballs to UNC’s 15, and the Terrapins won 16 of 23 face-offs during the game. The win marks the second time this season the Terrapins have beaten North Carolina.
