After leading No. 3 Notre Dame for almost 60 minutes, No. 12 North Carolina beat the Fighting Irish 9-8 in an overtime thriller Friday night at Fetzer Field.
The Tar Heels (10-5) went into the fourth quarter leading the Fighting Irish 8-4, but Notre Dame outshot UNC 19-3 in the final 15 minutes of the game. With 13 seconds to go, Notre Dame attackman Colin Igoe scored the tying goal to take the teams to overtime.
With just more than a minute left in the first overtime period, freshman attackman Pat Foster scored the game-winning goal for the Tar Heels.
Foster had two goals during the game, and sophomore attackman Marcus Holman led the Tar Heels with four. Six of UNC’s nine goals were scored by freshmen.
UNC went on a 3-0 run to start the game with help from freshman attackman Nicky Galasso’s back-to-back goals. Galasso leads UNC in scoring with 24 goals.
North Carolina’s win against the Fighting Irish (10-2) was the last game of the regular season. NCAA tournament matchups will be announced Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
