The No. 3 North Carolina women’s lacrosse team beat Virginia 15-7 Saturday at Fetzer Field in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Kara Cannizzaro led the Tar Heels (14-5) with four goals, and Laura Zimmerman tacked on three goals and an assist.
UNC committed 15 fouls in the first half alone and UVa (9-9) had seven, but the Cavaliers scored on just one of their five total free position shots during the game.
North Carolina’s win marked the third time this season the Tar Heels have beaten the Cavaliers. UNC dropped UVa 8-7 in the regular season and then knocked Virginia out of the ACC tournament with a 16-5 win.
UNC also beat Virginia last season in the second round of the NCAA tournament to seal its second consecutive trip to the final four.
The Tar Heels will host No. 6 Loyola (Md.)next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field in the NCAA quarterfinals.
