Today was not a good day for sports fans with tight schedules. After hurricane-like storms delayed UNC’s football game against Wake Forest in Winston Salem, rain and lightning arrived at Fetzer Field just in time to push back UNC’s men’s soccer game against Virginia Tech by 90 minutes.
But for UNC, it was a non-issue as they handled the Hokies 2-0.
“I hear this all the time and it’s a strange comment,” coach Carlos Somoano said. “A coach will say, ‘We had this rain delay, and we dealt with adversity.’ I don’t see a rain delay as adverse. An earthquake, that’s adversity. A rain delay is just a 90 minute rain delay. We don’t look at it as an issue.”
Somoano said he was unhappy at times with his team’s struggles to control the ball. But speedy midfielder and assist-machine Danny Garcia was equally dismissive of the rain as a valid excuse for sloppy play.
“It’s a good field, the field did a great job of draining the water,” the freshman said. “There’s nothing really affecting about it.”
UNC’s victory tonight was its 30th consecutive win at home. If Fetzer Field survived the evening’s deluge, maybe there really is something special about it.
