Tar Heels trail Wake Forest at the half, 21-14

WINSTON-SALEM — The North Carolina football team struck first, but Wake Forest grabbed a 21-14 lead in the waning minutes of the second quarter Saturday.

The Tar Heels scored during their second drive in the first quarter, as quarterback Bryn Renner connected with tight end Eric Ebron for a six-yard touchdown pass.

But Wake Forest followed that up with a touchdown of its own about five minutes later and did the same when the Tar Heels tacked on another seven points in their first drive of the second quarter.

A six-yard run by tailback Josh Harris with 4:31 on the first-half clock gave Wake Forest its 21-14 halftime lead.

The Tar Heels are playing without running back Giovani Bernard, who is in uniform but didn’t participate in pre-game drills. Bernard sat out during the second quarter of last Saturday’s game with a knee injury. A.J Blue got the start in Bernard’s place and has tallied 50 yards on the ground.

Renner took a hard hit in the second quarter and was knocked out of the game briefly, but he returned on the next drive.
