No.1 ranked North Carolina finally took the field at 8:30 p.m. against Virginia Tech after a 90-minute rain delay.
UNC leads VT 2-0 at the half.
The wet conditions played quite a factor in the first half as both the Tar Heels and Hokies failed to connect on passes early on.
However, the real story of the first half was the play of redshirt senior Martin Murphy.
Murphy struck first for the Tar Heels, chipping a shot just over the outstretched hands of Hokie goalie Kyle Renfro in the 14th minute. Just 90 seconds after his first goal, Murphy scored again off a free kick from about 30 yards back.
The rest of the first half was marked with missed opportunities on both sides. Virginia Tech’s closest chance came on a shot from midfielder Joe Prater, but the ball sailed just wide of the right post.
