Hello and welcome to another week’s worth of Behind Enemy Lines — the sports desk’s weekly attempt to expand your horizons beyond Chapel Hill.
Let’s get started:
- Virginia Tech, usually one of the ACC’s best excuses for a football school, failed to receive a single vote for this week’s AP Top 25 after losing a heart-breaker to Cinncinnati. The Hokies are 3-2 early in the season. Miami was the only school other than Clemson and FSU to receive votes (4) in this week’s poll.
- Duke’s football team continues to perform confusingly well. The Blue Devils’34-27 defeat of Wake Forest last weekend was especially pleasing for Duke fans inclined to break out the transitive property (UNC lost to the Demon Deacons in week two).
- Julius Randle, the nation’s third-ranked basketball recruit, has reportedly made phone calls to UNC, Duke and Baylor letting them know he’s no longer considering playing for them. N.C. State is among the six schools still on his radar.
- Florida State continues to dominate the ACC as the nation’s top women’s soccer team. The Seminoles are 11-0-0 (4-0-0 ACC) and again produced the conference’s ACC player of the week — this time, the wonderfully named Dagny Brynjarsdottir, who has scored 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) this season.
- Virginia allowed Louisiana Tech, who coincidentally belong to the same conference as Idaho, to score 34 unanswered points. The Cavaliers led 24-10 early in the game, but ended up losing 44-38.
