The Tar Heels’ lone goal came early in the first half as Caitlin Van Sickle intercepted a clear coming out of the circle. She drilled a hard ball back into the circle, and Loren Shealy got her stick on it to deflect the ball into the cage.
Virginia answered less than 20 minutes later off a set play from a penalty corner. Michelle Vittese connected with the pass coming off the end line and sent the ball into the goal. Though Van Sickle was there to help Ammer guard the goal, neither could prevent the shot from going in.
