After making the unorthodox move to pull goalkeeper Sassi Ammer with eight minutes remaining in the game, North Carolina rallied to tie Virginia in regulation, and forced an extra win, 3-2.
With Ammer out of the game, UNC added an extra forward to the field and put more pressure on UVa’s defense.
The gamble paid off and Charlotte Craddock netted the tying goal for UNC with less than five minutes left in the game.
The goal forced a sudden death overtime. UNC began attacking immediately, and after six minutes, senior defender Caitlin Van Sickle scored off a rebound from Kelsey Kolojejchick shot.
After the win, UNC (15-1, 4-0 ACC) is undefeated in the ACC and owns a 13-game win streak.
Virginia fell to 13-3, 2-1 ACC as UNC ended their undefeated ACC season and five-game win streak.
