UNC leading Miami 15-7 at the half

Giovani Bernard’s second touchdown of the day with just less than three minutes left in the first half kick-started a huge momentum swing.

Not only did the score break the 7-7 tie, the North Carolina football team stunned Miami with a quick two-point conversion to take the 15-7 lead.

On the ensuing Miami drive Tre Boston picked off Stephen Morris to ensure UNC would have the halftime lead.

UNC opened the scoring with a quick two and a half minute assault on their first offensive possession. Bernard had his way with the Miami defense and with a 3-for-3 start for quarterback Bryn Renner, the Tar Heels took the early 7-0 lead. It was Bernard that broke the plane with a ten-yard run.

The Tar Heels threatened on their next drive after Shakeel Rashad earned his first career interception for North Carolina. But Renner had a pass picked off near the goal line that gave possession back to the Hurricanes.

Miami tied the score at seven on a Mike James one-yard run in the second quarter made possible by five Tar Heel penalties on the drive. The most damaging of those penalties was a 15-yard roughing the kicker on fourth down that gave the Hurricanes the ball back after UNC had stalled their drive.

UNC will have the ball to start the second half.
