Behind Enemy Lines, Nov. 7

Happy Wednesday and welcome back to Behind Enemy Lines — a post-election special edition!

Just kidding, we know most of you prefer to keep your sports and your politics separate. Anyway, here’s what the rest of the ACC has been up to while you’ve been glued to CNN (or ESPN).

  • North Carolina’s field hockey team earned the NCAA tournament’s top overall seed, but they’ll be joined by ACC teams Virginia and Maryland. The tournament begins Saturday.
  • It seems N.C. State’s confidence suffered permanent damage after losing in heartbreaking fashion to UNC two weekends ago. The Wolfpack” lost badly “:http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/110312aaa.htmlto the lowly Virginia Cavaliers, whose 33-6 victory was their first in the ACC and third of the season.
  • Maryland’s unbeaten season came to an end at the hands (or feet) of Wake Forest last Thursday. The No. 18 Demon Deacons took down the nation’s top-ranked team 4-2, battling back from a 2-1 deficit.
  • On the women’s pitch, last week wasn’t a good one for conference giants either. No. 1 seed Florida State fell to fifth-seeded Virginia by a 4-2 margin (sound familiar?). FSU still received a top seed in the NCAA tournament, while both Virginia and North Carolina were named No. 2 seeds. In all the conference has nine teams in this year’s bracket.
  • Clemson’s Tahj Boyd earned the ACC’s Player of the Week award for his role — namely, six touchdowns — in the Tigers’ 56-20 win against Duke. Clemson accumulated a mind-boggling 718 yards of total offense against the Blue Devils.
