UNC advances to second round of NCAA Tournament

North Carolina defeated the Stanford Cardinal 4-1 Saturday afternoon, earning the right to play the winner of the day’s second game, either Michigan or Old Dominion. UNC has defeated both teams in regular season play.

Four players scored for the Tar Heels, who advance to the quarterfinal round of the Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

UNC took 16 shots to Stanford’s 10, and drew six penalty corners to the Cardinal’s four. Goalkeepers Sassi Ammer, of UNC, and Dulcie Davies, of Stanford, finished with four saves each.

Craddock and Bozek’s goals in the first half gave UNC a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half, senior forward Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany added to that cushion with a third goal, a deflection from the left side of the cage on a pass from fellow senior Kelsey Kolojejchick.

Card trouble likely made the job more difficult for the Tar Heels, who were slapped with four cards, and three in the second half. UNC received two green and yellow cards apiece, putting it a player down for nine minutes of the 70-minute contest.

Stanford closed the gap to 3-1 in the 60th minute on a Kelsey Harbin goal, but UNC’s Sinead Loughran iced the game with a fourth goal in the 68th.

Emma Bozek sent the ball into the circle on a cross from the right side, and Loughran was there to finish the goal and Stanford’s season.

The Cardinal will finish the 2012 season with a record of 16-7. UNC improves to 21-1.
