The Tar Heels played what might have been their best half of basketball all season en route to dominating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 41-17 in the first half of Sunday’s afternoon matchup.
This blog post will be up a little late, for reasons that the last bullet point will make apparent. But let’s start off with basketball:
- Megan Buckland shot five-for-five from behind the arc to lead the Tar Heels with 15 points off of the bench. Krista Gross added 10 points.
- The Tar Heels, who lead the nation with 14.9 steals per game, stole the ball 11 times during the first half and scored 16 points off of turnovers.
- Georgia Tech scored the game’s first bucket, a 3-pointer, but UNC scored the next 22. The Yellow Jackets put together a 12-3 run to draw within 10 at 25-15, but the Tar Heels closed out with a 16-2 to end the half.
- The Yellow Jackets seemed visibly frustrated by UNC’s defense, which forced four traveling calls and 17 total turnovers. The Tar Heels were also able to cause tie-ups, meaning the possession arrow went back and forth about as fast as UNC did on the fast break.
- Tierra Ruffin-Pratt relieved the towel girl of her duties about three times, apparently able to spot sweat that the towel girl hadn’t noticed.
- At halftime, nearly every mascot with North Carolina ties appeared on the floor for a basketball game. Sir Purr, Harry the Happy Dragon, the Carolina Railhawk, Wool E. Bull, Rameses, the Carolina Mudcat, and somewhat puzzlingly, the Taco Bell Taco, fought it out on the hardwood during five of the most surreal minutes of basketball played on Carmichael’s floor.
