CHARLOTTESVILLE — North Carolina leads the Virginia basketball team 25-24 after a grueling, physical first half in what is both schools’ ACC opener.
Junior Reggie Bullock leads the Tar Heels with nine points after missing UNC’s last game with a concussion. Joe Harris — Virginia’s leading scorer entering Sunday’s game — is leading the Cavaliers once again with seven points.
The Cavaliers are dominating UNC from behind the arc, shooting 57 percent from the 3-point line. UNC, meanwhile, shot just 32 percent in the half and was aided by a physical Virginia defense that jumped out to a quick seven fouls — much to the chagrin of the John Paul Jones Arena crowd.
UNC accrued all six of its first-half fouls in the half’s final 4:44. UNC’s first foul — on Bullock — drew a standing ovation from Cavalier fans.
Neither team has yet to breakaway. The largest lead of the game, by UNC, was a three-point margin.
