The North Carolina softball team defeated Radford University 7-1 in the first game of the home-opener doubleheader at Williams Field on Wednesday night.
Junior pitcher Lori Spingola held the Highlanders to just one hit while recording twelve strikeouts in six innings.
The game was scoreless until the third inning. Amy Nece took third base on a wild pitch and then scored off of a throwing error by the Radford catcher.
Freshman Kristen Brown opened the game up with a two-run homer over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Brown finished with three RBI in the game. Senior Constance Orr also sent one over the fence for two runs and sophomore Amber Parrish had an RBI single.
Radford showed signs of life in the top of the 7th inning when Becky Mantel singled to center off of freshman pitcher Lauren Fuller to put the Highlanders on the board, but Fuller closed the inning without further injury, sealing the Tar Heels’ win.
UNC and Radford are set to square off again at 6 pm.
