The No. 7 North Carolina men’s lacrosse team opened 2013 with a 16-8 win against unranked Air Force at Fetzer Field Friday night.
Sophomore attackman Jimmy Bitter led all scorers with five goals, including a score with one second left on the clock before halftime, which gave UNC an 8-6 halftime lead.
Senior captain attackman Marcus Holman, who led UNC last season with 74 points, had six assists — the most assists for a UNC player in a game since 1997.
After a sloppy first half of play against a less talented Air Force squad, the Tar Heels buckled down in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 8-2.
“I’m really proud of the effort tonight,” coach Joe Breschi said. “Obviously it’s the first game on Fetzer, the first game of the season and a lot of young guys starting. I think after a slow start we settled in and played our game in the second half, particularly at the goal and at the defensive end.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kieran Burke recorded his first career win in the cage. He saved 10 shots in the second half, holding the Falcons to two second-half goals.
