UNC Rankings Report, Feb. 21

Welcome to a brand new feature on From the Press Box. It’s called UNC Rankings Report, and it’s where you’ll find the latest rankings for UNC sports teams all in one place.

Without further ado, let’s take a look:

  • Men’s basketball (unranked): The men’s basketball team has done better recently (winning five of its last seven), but it’s still not enough to make up for a slow start to the season. P.J. Hairston and company will try to get some vengeance against an unranked N.C. State team this Saturday.
  • Women’s basketball (16): The women are coming off of a loss to Florida State, but like the men, they’ve won five out of their past seven games. Coming up Friday is an unranked Virginia Tech.
  • Baseball (1): The baseball team has lived up to its preseason No. 1 ranking thus far and has yet to lose a game. The Tar Heels are 3-0 after winning two games against Seton Hall and one against Coastal Carolina. This weekend they will have a three-game series against Stony Brook. Freshman outfielder Skye Bolt currently leads the team with a triple slash (AVG/OBP/SLG) of .667/.714/.833.
  • Men’s lacrosse (12): After a 16-8 season-opening win against Air Force, the Tar Heels fell to No. 13 Massachusetts 12-11 in the second game of the season. Their ranking is down to No. 12 from No. 7 last week, but the Tar Heels will look to rebound against Fairfield this weekend.
  • Women’s lacrosse (5): After losing to Florida on opening day, the women’s lacrosse team got back on track with a weekend sweep of Towson and Richmond The Tar Heels have another tough task ahead: They’ll host No. 1 Northwestern, the defending NCAA champion, on Friday.
  • Men’s tennis (22): Apparently, UNC teams have something about winning five out of seven because like both basketball teams, the men’s tennis team has done it as well. This Sunday the men take on Chattanooga.
  • Women’s tennis (1): The second and final No. 1 UNC team for this week is women’s tennis. That ranking might not stand for long, though, because after losing to No. 2 Florida on Monday, the Tar Heels will probably drop next week.
  • Swimming men (16), women (15): The women’s swimming team is currently in the midst of the ACC Championships Finals and is sitting in ninth place after opening day. The men will begin their ACC Championships Finals on Feb. 27.
  • Unranked teams: track and field, fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, softball.
