UNC Rankings Report, March 21

Welcome to UNC Rankings Report, where you’ll find the latest rankings for UNC sports teams all in one place.

Let’s take a look:

Men’s basketball (No. 8 seed in the NCAA tournament): Many people have made a fuss about the No. 8 seed Roy William’s team ended up with in the tournament, including Williams himself, but where are the big wins? The Tar Heels played well after a bad start to the season but still beat who they were supposed to beat and lost to who they were expected to lose to. UNC takes on No. 9 seed Villanova at 7:20 p.m. Friday on TNT.

Women’s basketball (No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament): The women grab a much better seed than the men after a season with an overall record of 28-6. The women will go up against No. 14 seed Albany on March 24 at 2:45 p.m.

Baseball (1): The baseball team is still holding on to its No. 1 spot after a 2-1 series win against Miami and a beat down of Princeton on Tuesday. The Tar Heels will play Boston College this weekend in Chapel Hill. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Boston, but the weather has made that impossible. A doubleheader starting Saturday at noon and a series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. is scheduled for this weekend.

Men’s lacrosse (12): The lacrosse team dropped six spots to fall to 12th after a loss to now-No. 13 Duke and win against unranked Dartmouth.

Women’s lacrosse (3): The women’s lacrosse team beat No. 10 Cornell on Wednesday. The Tar Heels improved to 8-1 on the season and face Boston College this Saturday at 7 p.m. here in Chapel Hill.

Men’s tennis (70): The ITA ranks 75 tennis teams, meaning the Tar Heels actually are ranked in Division I men’s tennis. The team fell 13 spots from the previous rankings. The team fell to No. 8 Duke Sunday.

Women’s tennis (1): The women’s team, on the other hand, is still going strong and holding on to its No. 1 spot out of the 75 ranked teams. The Tar Heels only have one loss on the season (14-1) and play No. 40 N.C. State today.

Swimming: Twelve women will be competing in the 2013 NCAA Division I Championships starting today. The event will last until March 23. On the men’s side, 10 swimmers will be going to the Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., March 28-30.

Unranked teams: track and field, fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, softball
