The No. 2 seed North Carolina men’s lacrosse team wasted no time jumping all over No. 3 seed Duke in the ACC semifinals at Kenan Stadium, leading the Blue Devils 13-6 by halftime.
Two Tar Heels — Marcus Holman and Chad Tutton — recorded hat tricks in the first half and six other Tar Heels joined in on the scoring frenzy.
After scooping a groundball in front of the crease, UNC attackman Joey Sankey found an opening against Duke goalkeeper Kyle Turri for the first goal of the game with 12:41 left in the first quarter.
Duke knotted the game at two with 7:34 remaining in the second quarter, but during the following 18 minutes, UNC went on a 8-1 run to take a 10-3 lead.
The teams then traded three answered goals apiece before the halftime buzzer.
If UNC holds on, it would be the team’s first win against Duke since 2010.
With a win, the Tar Heels would advance to fight for their first ACC title since 1996 against No. 4 seed Virginia, who beat top-seeded Maryland 13-6 in the tournament’s first semifinal.
