Coming off of an 11-4 victory against Northwestern in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament — a game in which coach Jenny said her team missed multiple opportunities on offense — the No. 3 North Carolina women’s lacrosse team haven’t missed many in the first half of the title game against No. 1 Maryland.
UNC leads the Terrapins 9-6, having only missed three shots while 10 of its 12 attempts have been on goal. It is the first time Maryland has trailed at halftime all season.
The Tar Heels have been led offensively by a three-goal performance from freshman attacker Aly Messinger. Senior midfielder Brittney Coppa has found the net twice while junior midfielder Taylor George has tallied one goal.
After picking up her second assist of the night on a goal scored by sophomore midfielder Kelly Devlin, senior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro broke the school record for points in a season with 81. Cannizzaro has scored two goals and recorded two assists in the first half of the title game.
Maryland has found offense from five of its midfielders as Taylor Cummings has found the net twice while Katie Schwarzamann, Brooke Griffin, Beth Glaros and Erin Collins have each added one goal.
UNC, which is playing to win its first national title in school history, will be looking to match the strong effort with which it played on both sides of the field against Northwestern in the second half against Maryland.
