Early this season, the North Carolina softball team won two out of three games in a series against Georgia Tech, but in Thursday night’s ACC tournament game, the Tar Heels didn’t have the luxury of getting three games to determine who was better — they had one.
With a 6-2 victory against the Yellow Jackets, UNC will move on to the ACC tournament’s semifinals and face a top-seeded Florida State team that bested the Tar Heels in two of the three meetings between the teams.
Against the Yellow Jackets, the offense was led by senior Haleigh Dickey who tied an ACC tournament record by blasting two home runs, single handedly accounting for a third of the Tar Heels’ offense.
With a plethora of Tar Heels involved early on, UNC’s batters worked to build up a 4-0 lead by the third inning. The rest of UNC’s offense was all Dickey with homers in the fourth and sixth innings.
On the mound, junior Lori Spingola pitched a complete game and struck out six players to get the win for the Tar Heels.
