P.J. Hairston cleared of all charges

North Carolina shooting guard P.J. Hairston was cleared of all charges stemming from his June 5 arrest, a Durham court clerk said Monday.

Hairston was arrested at a license checkpoint in Durham last month and charged with driving without a license and possession of marijuana.

Deputy Clerk Monica Richardson said both charges had been dismissed.

According to the June 5 incident report, police seized a 9mm handgun and magazine in addition to 41.1 grams of marijuana.

Durham Police Public Information Officer Kammie Michael said at the time the gun and ammunition were both found outside the car. She said July 10 that Durham Police did not anticipate filing any additional charges against Hairston.

At the time of the arrest, Hairston was driving a rented GMC Yukon. USA Today first reported that the car was rented by Haydn ‘Fats’ Thomas — a felon with a lengthy criminal record, who is also awaiting trial for drug and gun charges unrelated to Hairston.

Coach Roy Williams said July 15 that while a number of disciplinary charges might be on the table for Hairston, he would wait until the legal process was finished to decide on one.

“Certainly the idea of suspending P.J. has been discussed,” Williams wrote in a statement.

“However, he is not currently enrolled in school, is not practicing with the team and we have no games until November.”

More information will be reported as it becomes available.
