North Carolina women’s lacrosse captain Kara Cannizzaro and women’s soccer senior midfielder Crystal Dunn are both nominated for “Best Female College Athlete” at ESPN’s ESPY awards this year.
Fans can vote for the candidates they prefer on ESPN.com, and voting ends when the award show — which is hosted by Jon Hamm — begins at 9 p.m. Wednesday night.
In preparation for the awards, here are some of the major accomplishments Dunn and Cannizzaro have achieved throughout the last year:
Kara Cannizzaro
- As a senior captain, Cannizzaro led the Tar Heels to their first-ever NCAA championship and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. With 16 goals on 26 shots, she proved her efficiency in four tournament games.
- In the final two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, UNC’s single-season points record-holder scored a total of eight goals against Northwestern and Maryland.
- By leading the ACC in caused turnovers and having the third most goals and points, Cannizzaro won the Honda Award for women’s lacrosse and earned the 2013 Patterson Medal as UNC’s top female student-athlete.
Crystal Dunn
- After starting her first two seasons at UNC, Dunn missed the non-conference portion of UNC’s 2012 season because she was playing for the U-20 US National Team at the World Cup.
- In the 17 games she played, Dunn started and tallied 15 points with five goals, earning her NSCAA First Team All-American honors.
- As the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Dunn played a key role on both offense and defense for the Tar Heels who won their 22nd national championship in school history.
