Denver Nuggets starting point guard Tywon “Ty” Lawson was arrested Saturday night in Denver, and according to court records, faces charges of physical harassment and criminal mischief after a fight broke out between him and his pregnant girlfriend Ashley Pettiford.
An official Arapahoe County sheriff’s report obtained by USA Today stated Pettiford told police Lawson grabbed and pushed her as she attempted to pack her bags and leave. In the report, the 25-year-old point guard admitted to pushing his girlfriend but said it was not a “real push”.
Both Lawson and Pettiford were arrested and detained until Monday due to the allegations of domestic violence. According to the Denver Post, Lawson is now free on an $1000 bond.
The point guard played at UNC from 2006-2009, and was a part of the 2009 Tar Heel national championship-winning team. During his final season in Chapel Hill, Lawson — then a junior — averaged 16.6 points and 6.6 assists per game en route to being named the ACC Player of the Year. He also won the Bob Cousy Award, given each year to the nation’s top point guard.
Lawson was selected 18th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Nuggets on draft night. In October 2012, he received a four-year contract extension with Denver — a deal he backed up by putting together his best season in the NBA thus far. The 5-foot-11 point guard averaged 16.7 points, 6.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game during the 2012-2013 season — all career highs.
