At the end of the first half at Fetzer Field, the No. 2 North Carolina men’s soccer team is tied 2-2 with the No. 18 Maryland Terrapins.
While the Terrapins have nearly twice as many shots, 7, as the Tar Heels, 4, UNC holds a slight advantage in saves 3-2.
Maryland opened up scoring for the game when a loose ball dropped to Schillo Tshuma who rifled a shot to the top right corner.
The Tar Heels followed suit quickly with a goal of their own though. After Jordan McCrary was fouled on the baseline inside the 18-yard box, Raby George easily netted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game.
Freshman Omar Holness took the lead for the Tar Heels in the 21st minute by scoring the first goal of his career.
Dribbling through three defenders around midfield, the native of Kingston, Jamaica broke free and barreled down the field, ending the play with a simple slip past Maryland’s goalkeeper Zack Steffan.
Maryland would then tie the game back up with just less than ten minutes left in the half. Schillo Tshuma, who scored his second goal of the game, hit a well-struck ball low to the right corner just out of Brendan Moore’s reach.
Tonight’s game is the 73rd time the two teams have met and the last ACC regular season matchup within the rivalry, as Maryland will leave the conference for the Big Ten next year.
