The No. 1 North Carolina field hockey team leads #13 Duke 2-1 at halftime.
The Tar Heels have outshot their rivals from down the road 14 to five, and 12 of those shots have been on goal.
UNC’s first score came from Marta Malmberg off of a penalty stroke less than 10 minutes into the half.
The Tar Heels’ offense pressured the Blue Devils — with UNC retaining possession for most of the half — but Duke’s goalie Lauren Blazing recorded a career-high 10 saves in the first 35 minutes.
The Tar Heels registered four corners in the half, and the fourth resulted in UNC’s second goal of the game. With six minutes left in the half, Emily Wold sent the ball into play for Sinead Loughran to trap and Samantha Travers sent a rocket into goal.
Two minutes later, Duke got on the board when a crossing pass eluded UNC’s diving goalie, Sassi Ammer, and was tapped in by Duke’s Devon Gagliardi.
Duke notched its first corner of the half as time expired in the first half, but was unable to score off of it.
