QuoteFile, Sept. 13

Each time a writer of The Daily Tar Heel sports desk writes a story, there are quotes that we try our hardest to put on the page but in the end don’t make it.

With “QuoteFile”, we’re able to give these quotes life. Join us every Friday to check out the best quotes of the week that didn’t make it into the news.

Welcome to the latest edition of QuoteFile:

UNC football coach Larry Fedora on the return of linebacker Darius Lipford, who missed all last season due to injury:

“A little light bulb comes on each time (Lipford) has something happen on the field.”

“We’re now getting Lipford and (bandit Norkeithus) Otis on the field at the same time in some packages. You’re seeing both of them make plays.”

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Brendan Moore on the men’s soccer team’s starting back line on defense:

“These guys do a really good job of holding down the back line. They make me feel very comfortable back there and know I can trust them completely. They communicate well — tell me what I need to do and when I need to do it — and also listen to what I have to say. So we’re a good combination back there.”

Junior Brandon Dalinka on the men’s golf team’s prospects in 2013-2014:

“It’s tough losing (top player Michael) McGowan. He was a big contributor to our team last year, but we still got a bunch of good guys on this team. We’ve got a deep team. We’ll have a lot of competition in qualifying. I feel like we can compete as long as we bring our best each tournament”

UNC men’s soccer coach Carlos Somoano on junior transfer from Southern Methodist Tyler Engel, the team’s leading scorer:

“It’s not easy coming in as a new player so that’s positive when a new player can come in and be successful right away. I think part of it is his college experience. He’s had to go through some tough games already. In some regards he’s used to it and in other regards there’s a lot of things new to him. I’m very pleased with his contributions so far. He’s very clean in the box, very dangerous when he gets in the final third and is very composed.”

Senior safety Tre Boston on the UNC football team’s strong defensive performance against Middle Tennessee State Sept. 7:

“We want to show how good we are. We know how good we are as a defense. We know how good we are as a secondary, and it’s one of those things where we need to show it. We need to show the people what we’re capable of. Being able to show that this week after the tough loss last week it really helped.”

Tre Boston on his faith:

“You’ve got to have confidence in yourself, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to know that you are second only to God. I’m not going to say I’m second only to him, but I definitely want to put him above because I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him.”

THE BEST QUOTE OF THE WEEK

UNC women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance on forwards Emily Bruder, Kealia Ohai and Summer Green:

“Those three have license to smack it from wherever they are. I have no issue with that.”
