QuoteFile, Sept. 6

Each time a writer of The Daily Tar Heel sports desk writes a story, there are quotes that we try our hardest to put on the page but in the end don’t make it.

With our new blog feature “QuoteFile”, we’re able to give these quotes life. Join us every Friday to check out the best quotes of the week that didn’t make it into the news.

UNC men’s soccer coach Carlos Somoano on whether his team’s offense is developing ahead of schedule this season:

“I don’t know if we put it on schedules. We take what we got and we try to work with what we have and make it better. We try to squeeze everything out of every day. That’s all I can ask from the guys. If I start putting expectations on them and say — ‘well we’ve got to be here by a certain time’ — and then we’re not, they’re just going to feel like they failed. And we’re not failing if we’re committing to each other and to becoming better. I just want to measure it on that. Let’s just be the best that we can today.”

UNC field hockey coach Karen Shelton on sophomore forward Casey Di Nardo:

“I think she’s improved tremendously over the course of the year. …
And she’s confident with her own ability. She likes to go to the ball —that’s why I recruited her.”

UNC women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance on senior midfielder Crystal Dunn:

“And what else can we say about Crystal Dunn? We rode that thoroughbred to the national championship last year and again she gets us back in this game.”

Senior forward Kealia Ohai on the UNC women’s soccer team’s missed corner kick opportunities against Kennesaw State Sept. 2.:

“We definitely need to fix that, because in big games a corner kick might be the deciding factor. If we get 13 corners we should at least be scoring one or two.”

Former UNC men’s lacrosse attackman Marcus Holman on how it feels to be surrounded by great lacrosse players during tryouts for Team USA:

“These are guys that I really looked up to and modeled my game after. Obviously I tried to play it cool and do my thing.”

Quarterback Bryn Renner on the UNC football team’s season-opening loss to South Carolina:

“We had a very good game plan against South Carolina. We just didn’t execute. They’re a great team and we had opportunities to make big plays but we didn’t make them.”

“ (South Carolina has) the best D-line in the country, I think. Just from top to bottom, the guys rotating in even when (defensive end Jadeveon) Clowney wasn’t in, there are very good players. SEC defense — very good and you expect that. Going into the game, we knew they were going to be tough up front. But as far as protection, Clowney didn’t have a sack. He only had three tackles … And they definitely forced some pressure at times but I think for the most our offensive line did a great job.

Defensive end Kareem Martin on the takeaways from the South Carolina loss:

“We had a tough loss Thursday against South Carolina. But the big thing Coach Fedora was talking about is we’re not that far. If you take away three or four plays, it’s a whole different game. After watching the film, it wasn’t as bad as we initially though. There’s a lot of big things we can move forward with that show we can be a good team in the future moving forward.”

THE BEST QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

“Did you eat your wheaties today?,” a reporter asked Kareem Martin at a UNC football press conference Monday.

Martin’s response:
“No, I had Frosted Flakes.”
