Tar Heels sweep Carolina Classic

The North Carolina Volleyball team concluded the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Albany Saturday to win the Carolina Classic and extend its undefeated season start to 9-0 for the first time since 1981.

The Tar Heels coasted to the victory with 25-13, 25-10 and 25-14 wins to hand Albany its ninth loss of the season. The Great Danes have yet to win a set in their 27 sets played.

Graduate student and outside hitter Jovana Bjelica recorded 11 kills on the night to lead both teams offensively. Paige Neuenfeldt followed closely behind with nine of her own, while Lauren Adkins had seven. Taylor Treacy and Kayla Berringer each had five.

Treacy — along with junior libero Ece Taner — was named to the All-Tournament team. Berringer was the tournament’s MVP.

Coach Joe Sagula said he was pleased with his team’s ability to come out energized after playing a game earlier Saturday and a game Friday night. Friday night the Tar Heels defeated George Washington 3-0. Saturday afternoon they swept George Washington.

“It’s great to be 9-0 and get some momentum,” he said.

“I thought that we finished playing well … I was really proud of how the intensity was much stronger — a lot more enthusiasm about playing our game.”
