BLACKSBURG, Va. — At the half, Virginia Tech leads North Carolina 21-7 in Blacksburg.
North Carolina was nearly in a deeper hole going into the half when quarterback Marquise Williams, starting in place of injured quarterback Bryn Renner, threw an interception with less than three minutes left in the half.
But after three plays, UNC forced the Hokies to punt and ended the half with possession.
After back and forth possessions early in the first quarter, Virginia Tech settled into a rhythm and scored its first touchdown with 4 minutes 17 seconds left in the first quarter. Hokie quarterback Logan Thomas fired off a 45-yard pass to Demitri Knowles.
Then, less than two minutes into the second quarter, Thomas connected with D.J. Coles to score Virginia Tech’s second touchdown of the day.
The Tar Heels didn’t score until midway through the second quarter. Williams tossed a ball into the end zone and tight end Eric Ebron made a difficult touchdown catch while fending off Virginia Tech defenders.
Williams carried the ball 10 times for 32 rushing yards, and completed 7 of 14 attempts with one interception for 97 yards.
By comparison, Thomas had six carries for 23 yards and completed 13 of 20 attempts for 230 yards.
The Tar Heels gave up 277 yards in total offense while only recording 147.
