For the first time in program history, coach Anson Dorrance and the North Carolina women’s soccer team lost a home game in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
UCLA won 1-0 with a golden goal in the second minute of the second overtime period. UNC senior goalkeeper Anna Sieloff made an initial save on a shot from the Bruins’ Taylor Smith, but Smith was able to collect the rebound and finish from just three yards away.
The Tar Heels handed UCLA its only loss of the year in the early weeks of the season, but couldn’t repeat the feat Saturday night, and the Bruins’ earned their first ever victory against UNC.
UNC and UCLA both tallied 11 shots in the game, with UCLA holding an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sieloff tallied seven saves in the game, good for a new career-high.
