CHARLOTTE — Proving proficient in all three phases of the game, the North Carolina football team jumped out to a 23-3 lead in the first half of Saturday’s Belk Bowl Matchup with Cincinnati.
UNC has been buoyed by a strong defensive and special teams effort, which has recovered a fumble on a punt return, forced four sacks, a safety and a 78-yard touchdown return by T.J. Logan on the ensuing safety kickoff.
Logan was UNC’s leading rusher in the first half, racking up 66 yards — including 40 yards on UNC’s first touchdown drive. Fellow tailback Romar Morris finished off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
Both UNC quarterback Marquise Williams and Cincinnati quarterback Brendon Kay have been inconsistent in the passing game, going 11-for-22 and 9-for-21, respectively. Williams has thrown for 105 yards and tallied a touchdown on a short pass to tight end Jack Tabb. Kay has thrown for 95 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Bearcats’ lone score came on a field-goal attempt in the beginning of the second quarter. The Bearcats missed a 46-yard attempt later in the quarter.
