In the first game of the 2014 season, the North Carolina football team jumped out to a 21-15 lead over Liberty during the first half at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
After months of debate on who would start at quarterback for the Tar Heels, Marquise Williams took the field for UNC’s first drive and marched the team 61 yards on eight plays — resulting in a 7-yard touchdown grab by sophomore wide receiver Bug Howard.
Following the early touchdown, senior safety Tim Scott, who started at cornerback due to the suspensions of Brian Walker and Des Lawrence, forced a fumble to give UNC even more of an edge, but Williams threw an interception on the first play following the turnover to thwart the opportunity.
Williams’ interception prompted Coach Larry Fedora to bring in redshirt freshman Mitch Trubisky, who completed two passes for 21 yards and rushed for 12 yards on the drive. The drive was capitalized by a 1-yard touchdown run by junior running back Romar Morris.
Liberty responded to the early deficit by scoring 15 unanswered points on two touchdowns and a safety, which occurred after a bad snap sailed over the head of punter Tommy Hibbard — forcing him to kick the ball out of the end zone.
With the clock winding down in the second half, Williams led the Tar Heels down the field and scored on a 3-yard run to give UNC the lead heading into the locker room.
