The North Carolina football team might be a few months away from putting on pads and taking the field for the 2015 season. But on Thursday, the season suddenly became much closer.
The ACC released the 2015 football schedule on Thursday, and the Tar Heels' schedule features a season-opening showdown in Charlotte against South Carolina, seven home games and a Thursday night road game at Pittsburgh.
UNC opens its season with non-conference games against South Carolina, North Carolina A&T, Illinois and Delaware — marking the first time since 1990 that the first four games of the season are out of conference.
The Tar Heels play five games at Kenan Stadium over a seven-week span from Sept. 7-Oct. 24. UNC's bye week is during this time period, and the team will travel to Georgia Tech for its only road game during the seven-week stretch.
The road game against Georgia Tech is UNC's ACC opener. The Tar Heels are 1-13 in ACC openers over the past 14 seasons and haven't won at Georgia Tech since 1997.
UNC plays five straight games against teams from the Coastal Division from Oct. 24-Nov. 21 before closing its season against N.C. State for the second consecutive year on Nov. 28.
