North Carolina linebacker Joe Jackson has decided to end his football playing career after suffering a neck injury in UNC's season opener against South Carolina, the team announced Thursday.
Jackson, who was named as the Tar Heels' starting weakside linebacker before the season began, saw action in nine games in his first two seasons with the team. He had four tackles in the season-opener against the Gamecocks.
"After talking with my family and the UNC doctors, I have decided it is in my best interest to stop playing football," Jackson said in a statement. "It was a difficult decision and I appreciate the support of my teammates and coaches."
