The last time North Carolina lost a regular-season football game, it was a 17-13 defeat to South Carolina on Sept. 3. Since then, UNC has clinched the ACC Coastal Division and will play Clemson for the ACC Championship on Saturday in Charlotte. Many fans are still asking, "How did we lose to South Carolina?" But while we fight to figure that out, we're celebrating UNC's 11-1 record and looking back on the 89 days that have passed since the Tar Heels' most recent loss.
1. Pam Hemminger unseated Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt.
On Nov. 3, Pam Hemminger won the election for Chapel Hill Mayor. Kleinschmidt has been mayor since 2009 and before then, he sat on the Chapel Hill Town Council from 2001 to 2009. Wednesday is his last day in office.
This election also saw two incumbent Chapel Hill Town Council members unseated — Lee Storrow and Jim Ward. The four open seats on the council will be filled by challengers Nancy Oates, Jessica Anderson and Michael Parker and incumbent Donna Bell.
2. Tom + Chee closed.
We lost other Franklin Street restaurants — Hummus Cafe, I guess — and gained more — Saswadee, Moe's — but the important matter here: We lost something we never knew we needed. The Daily Tar Heel editors are still grieving this loss. If you need us, we're probably at Linda's.
3. UNC's Marcus Paige broke his hand and broke our hearts.
Shortly after, No. 1 UNC lost to unranked Northern Iowa 71-67. We don't know how, but we do know one thing: UNC is no longer ranked No. 1. That was fun while it lasted.
He's back, though. So we've been told.
4. In mid-September, word got out that UNC had received a proposal from a national company to take over Student Stores.
Since then, students, faculty, staff and community members have rallied behind Student Stores and protested to administrators to prevent Follett from taking over. A second protest took place on Monday to oppose the potential privatization. Monday marked Student Stores' annual Mammoth Monday sale, as well as Director John Gorsuch's last day of work after announcing his retirement.
5. A UNC faculty member was awarded a Nobel Prize in chemistry.
Biophysics and biochemistry professor Aziz Sancar was awarded the prize on Oct. 7 for his work on DNA repair.
