UNC men's lacrosse reacts to NCAA rule change

This fall, the NCAA created a rule to speed up men’s lacrosse games and prevent offenses from holding on to the ball without attempting to create shot attempts. The rule puts in place a 30-second countdown that would be started by referees at their discretion and replaces the former “get it in, keep it in” call. Friday night in Chapel Hill, the UNC men’s lacrosse team got its first taste of the rule in regular season action when they hosted Air Force. But for UNC it didn’t make a big difference. “I think our offense plays pretty fast,” senior captain Marcus Holman said.

UNC beats Air Force 16-8 in season opener

The No. 7 North Carolina men’s lacrosse team opened 2013 with a 16-8 win against unranked Air Force at Fetzer Field Friday night. Sophomore attackman Jimmy Bitter led all scorers with five goals, including a score with one second left on the clock before halftime, which gave UNC an 8-6 halftime lead. Senior captain attackman Marcus Holman, who led UNC last season with 74 points, had six assists — the most assists for a UNC player in a game since 1997. After a sloppy first half of play against a less talented Air Force squad, the Tar Heels buckled down in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 8-2. “I’m really proud of the effort tonight,” coach Joe Breschi said.

UNC men's lacrosse leads Air Force 8-6 at halftime

The No. 7 North Carolina men’s lacrosse team leads Air Force 8-6 at halftime. Jimmy Bitter leads all scorers with three goals, and senior captain Marcus Holman leads the team with 4 assists. Air Force has held UNC with 8 saves on the Tar Heels’ 22 shots, and has supported that with two-goal performances from Erik Smith and Mike Crampton. The Tar Heels took the two-goal lead after Bitter scored his third goal of the game at the last second of the half on a back down isolation play from about five yards out.
