Volleyball team picks up rare road Duke win

It’s been about eight years since the North Carolina volleyball team defeated Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but Friday the team claimed a 3-1 victory to defeat the Blue Devils for the second time this season. Coach Joe Sagula said he was proud of the Tar Heels’ balanced performance, both offensively and defensively, and he told his team that after the match.

With the Duke and UNC football teams squaring off today at 7 p.m., here are a few stories to get you geared up for the game: Duke is looking for its first win against UNC since 2003. Harold Gutmann of the Durham Herald-Sun writes that UNC is looking to keep the Victory Bell painted Carolina Blue. Duke defensive lineman Kenny Anunike said the Blue Devils might have the answers to stop UNC tailback Giovani Bernard, writes Laura Keeley of the (Raleigh) News & Observer. Meanwhile, UNC is looking to stop Duke wide receiver Conner Vernon, Andrew Carter of the (Raleigh) News & Observer writes. Carter and Keeley write that Duke-UNC football feels like a rivalry.


Terrapins edge UNC soccer team in overtime, 1-0

After thwarting the Maryland attack at every turn for 97 minutes, North Carolina goalkeeper Scott Goodwin finally let a ball get past him on a 98th-minute deflection from Maryland freshman Schillo Tshuma in overtime at Ludwig Field in College Park on Friday.
