Tracking the Tar Heels, Oct. 16

Welcome to another edition of Tracking the Tar Heels. Here’s what the Tar Heels have been up to: In the UNC football team’s game against Miami last weekend, Tar Heel miscues allowed the Hurricanes to stay in it, Senior Writer Kelly Parsons writes. NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick presented UNC wrestler Nick Heilmann with a full scholarship on Monday, marking the beginning of the Kevin Harvick Foundation’s three-year commitment to annually award a full scholarship to one UNC student athlete in need. The UNC football challenge will face a tough challenge trying to slow down Duke wide receiver Conner Vernon in the matchup between the two teams this week, Andrew Carter of the News & Observer writes. Last but not least, North Carolina Women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell passed along this story to the DTH – a tribute to the late former UNC-system President Bill Friday.

UNC field hockey defeats UVa in overtime

After making the unorthodox move to pull goalkeeper Sassi Ammer with eight minutes remaining in the game, North Carolina rallied to tie Virginia in regulation, and forced extra time.


UNC leading Miami 15-7 at the half

Giovani Bernard’s second touchdown of the day with just less than three minutes left in the first half kick-started a huge momentum swing. Not only did the score break the 7-7 tie, the North Carolina football team stunned Miami with a quick two-point conversion to take the 15-7 lead. On the ensuing Miami drive Tre Boston picked off Stephen Morris to ensure UNC would have the halftime lead.


HALF: UNC and UVa tied at the half

No. 2 North Carolina and No. 5 UVa are tied 1-1 at the half. The game is evenly matched. UVa has taken six shots with five of them on goal while UNC has 11 shots with eight of them on target.


Price is right at home in Miami

Though he grew up a Miami fan, Jabari Price certainly won’t be pulling for the Hurricanes this weekend. Price cut ties with his favorite childhood football team the moment he committed to coach Butch Davis and North Carolina. He said the Hurricanes tried to recruit him after that commitment, but at the point, it was too late. On Saturday, the Pompano Beach, Fla., native and junior UNC cornerback will return to his hometown for the Tar Heels’ ACC Coastal Division clash with Miami.

The North Carolina men’s soccer team leads Davidson College 1-0 at halftime. After a mostly scoreless half, freshman forward Danny Garcia chipped a shot in over Davidson’s goalkeeper, Matt Pacifici in the 41st minute to score the lone goal.
