Athletic department updates players on social media

The North Carolina athletic department released an updated version of its social networking policy to its student-athletes on Monday. The policy reminder comes at a time when Twitter and Facebook have played roles with players involved with the NCAA investigation into possible improprieties with sports agents and a former University mentor.


UNC-Stanford finish in 2-2 tie

After 110 hard-fought minutes against No. 2 Stanford, the North Carolina women’s soccer team ended its first home game of the season in a 2-2 tie.


UNC will hold press conference tonight at 7:30

Chancellor Holden Thorp, athletic director Dick Baddour and football head coach Butch Davis will hold a press conference tonight at 7:30 regarding the NCAA investigation, associate athletic director of communications Steve Kirschner said.

Jordan rode the bus for the right reasons

Ron Shelton, known throughout the film industry as the director of “Bull Durham,” directs the latest installment in ESPN’s 30-for-30 series, “Jordan Rides the Bus.” The film chronicles Michael Jordan’s departure from the world of basketball at the prime of his career and joining the minor league baseball team Birmingham Barons. On Thursday, Shelton and I discussed his latest project, which is set to air Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.


DT Willis to transfer from UNC

In his opening statement to the media after Thursday’s morning practice, North Carolina football coach Butch Davis disclosed that freshman defensive tackle Brandon Willis has decided to transfer from the University.


Football loses another freshman

Just more than a week after losing freshman running back Giovani Bernard for the season due to an ACL tear, North Carolina football took another blow on Tuesday when freshman linebacker Ty Linton signed to play professional baseball with the Arizona Diamondbacks.


ESPN announces College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon schedule

Although college basketball season is still three months away, roundball junkies will be pleased to hear that ESPN has announced the schedule for its third-annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, which will take place this year on Nov. 16. The marathon will begin at midnight when Memphis hosts Miami and continue for 25.5 consecutive hours of live college basketball to be televised on ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN U.


Freshman RB out for the season

North Carolina freshman running back Giovani Bernard suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during practice on Sunday afternoon and will be sidelined for the entire 2010 season, team spokesman Kevin Best said in an email on Monday.
