If you want to watch Bad Boys on a Monday night in the library, Netflix might soon be your provider.
Some university libraries are subscribing to Netflix across the nation. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that while some librarians are making claims that it’s a cheaper video-rental method, the DVD rental service says this violates their terms of use.
For now, UNC is not a Netflix subscriber and Winifred Fordham Metz, the media librarian for UNC’s Undergraduate Library, said she doesn’t plan on subscribing until Netflix offers an institutional or academic subscription policy.
Some students, however, said it would be a waste of money.
“No, put the money somewhere else where there’s better use for it,” said Patrick Brown, a junior at UNC. Brown knows where the media center is, but said he has never used it for video renting.
He said the subscriptions would be better suited for dorms instead of the library.
Anneke Demmink, a junior at UNC agreed with Brown.
“Most dorms have video libraries, so it would already be more convenient for dorms to subscribe,” she said.
With no institutional themed subscription from Netflix, UNC probably won’t be adding it to the bill anytime soon.
