As a way to promote student awareness for their programs, UNC-Pembroke’s student body government and football team have implemented an incentive that hits straight to the heart of many students — the stomach.
How? UNC-P’s student body president, Arjay Quizon, confirmed that for every 20 points scored during a football game, 10 times as many tacos will be given away for free to students the following Monday. If the team scores 60 points, the giveaway doubles to 400.
Sounds like a solid deal for students. Whether they go to the game or not, whether the football team actually wins or loses, if they score the points, the bargain will happen.
So are more students flocking to the games to cheer on the team for this free food deal? Unfortunately, it’s unknown if the plan actually works, because it has only just begun at UNC-P.
“We haven’t been able to check because we’ve only done it once, but we will be monitoring attendance,” Quizon said.
Could incentives like this boost athletic attendance here at UNC Chapel Hill? Freshman student April Gregory, who isn’t really a sports fan, doesn’t seem to think so.
“If the team sucks, there won’t be free food,” Gregory said.
On the other hand, sophomore Kiva Moore thinks it’s an idea that could possibly work.
“It is a good idea, but it would be better, if possible, to give them away at the game,” Moore said. “It is better to have free food than not at all and T-shirts would be even better.”
