According to the most recent election results from the N.C. Board of Elections, N.C. Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, D-Orange, is leading the race for her seat in the N.C. Senate.
She defeated challenger Ryan Hilliard in Orange County with 69.6 percent of the vote.
“I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t carry Person County,” Kinnaird said.
She acknowledged Orange County favors the Democratic party, while voters in Person County have other issues — like a high rate of unemployment — to face.
“In a tough time like this, they’re looking for answers from the other party,” she said.
Kinnaird cited her party’s support for higher education funding as a key factor in gaining student votes.
With votes still coming in from across the state, it is too early to tell if the Democrats will retain the majority in the N.C. Senate and House.
“I think that funding is very secure if the Democrats win,” she said.
