Halloween came a bit early for residents of Chapel Hill last night, prompting some confused looks and statements.
“Trick or treaters? Wait, that can’t be happening,” said one resident visited by members of UNC Dance Marathon who were not too old to trick-or-treat Monday night as they went door to door to raise $231 for N.C. Children's Hospital.
Even though Dance Marathon’s 24-hour main event will not take place until February 19, their fundraising is already in full force.
“Starting now we have events weekly”, said Katherine Brandon, Dance Marathon’s media relations chair. Proxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 p>
“We want as much exposure as possible because the more people know, the more they want to get involved.”
About 30 students dressed in a variety of costumes stopped at The Verge, the Governor’s Club, Homestead, North Street, and Boundary Street for the fundraiser.
“I love being able to be a little kid again”, said “Batgirl”, or Alli Sarfati, a sophomore biology major.
The students were members of Dance Marathon’s Campus Fundraising Committee, lead by Sarah Beth Wilkison, a senior.
Wilkison, who was dressed as a pirate, noted that the trick or treating was a creative way to involve the community with Dance Marathon’s on-campus activities while also raising money for the hospital.
“A lot of people just can’t commit to a 24-hour event, but the Campus Fundraising Committee helps show people how they can contribute without making the 24-hour commitment”, she said.
