Interested in helping a good cause and eating a tasty treat? Check out Challah for Hunger in the Pit today.
Challah for Hunger donates proceeds from the traditionally Jewish, braided bread to the American Jewish World Service and the Inter-Faith Council (IFC), a Carrboro organization providing hunger relief.
The bread, which is homemade by members of the group, is traditionally served plain or sesame, but is also sold in chocolate chip and cinnamon flavors.
“I prefer the plain because that’s what I grew up with, but a lot of people like the chocolate chip,” said sophomore Shayna Bernstein, who was selling the bread last week.
Typically eaten on the Sabbath, the bread reminds Bernstein and fellow student Noam Soker, also at the challah stand, of home.
“It’s a bonding thing,” Soker said. “I made it with my mom and grandmother.”
After trying the traditional sesame last Thursday, I can personally serve testament to the bread’s homemade deliciousness.
Today is the last time this year to buy challah bread. Look for the table with the yellow “Challah for Hunger” banner in the Pit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
